Dane Howard is a Design leader & Entrepreneur. As a creative generator, he designs momentum for world class products, services and brands.

He has built, grown & led teams for both start-ups and big companies. He also co-founded a start-up which was acquired by eBay.  He loves to mine the experience potential in companies, and is a humble leader driven by purpose.
Dane has worked on an international scale with CEO’s and Product leadership. He has played a principle design and leadership role in developing key strategies for Microsoft, BMW, Major League Baseball, Scient, Quokka Sports, NBCOlympics, Alias/Wavefront, eBay and Trov. He has global experience in design, brand and marketing which garnered several prestigious awards.

Dane believes that stories build in strength with re-telling. Product stories become the reason we all move forward together.

He recently joined the Samsung NEXT product team as their new Global Head of Design & Product Experience.

Dane is an authorpainter, photographer, designer, and father. A personal website for his kids spawned a book entitled, The Future of Memories to help anyone better prepare, document and share their life’s stories.

Dane is an advisor to ‘‘ and frequently speaks on design & culture transformation.

As Global head of Design, I am responsible to grow, mentor and lead the global product design teams. I help drive the full lifecycle of a product experiences from early stage narrative to the product design and end to end experience, and Go to market execution and refinement.

Director, Global Brand Experience (2013-Present)

  • Responsible for leading the company-wide effort for cultural change for ebay inc. across all of ebay’s design teams. Appointed by the CEO to work with John Maeda on a four-pillar initiative to activate design, grow community and build a strong talent pipeline. Designed and launched for developing and managing a cohesive visual narrative and identity for eBay Inc., supporting the company’s communications, brand, enterprise business development and stakeholder engagement strategies.

Director, Verticals & PreVIZ Design (2008-2013)

  • eBay Mobile – 
    2008-2010 – Responsible for design of initial iOS launch and growth of the eBay mobile app, iPad app and growing the design team. Successfully grew design team along with extraordinary revenue growth from $600m in year one to $2.2b in year two.eBay Verticals – 
    Manage & Mentor the Global Design teams that serve eBay’s largest vertical businesses, including:
    – eBay Tech & Electronics
    – Home & Garden

    Grow & lead a new Pre-Visualization design practice for eBay. Through proactive design labs & workshops, responsible to lead eBay product groups through a process of solving business problems by visualizing them. PreVIZ enables better planning & execution of product experiences across the business units world-wide.

Initial Customer Experience (ICE)

Responsible for taking the global customer research for mobile handsets and turning it into a User Experience strategy, including prototypes, taxonomy and demonstrations representing a series of key investments proposed division wide. The goal of the work was to illustrate how an experience-based design and focus would improve the customer journey for Windows Mobile Devices.

  • Led Cross-division collaboration and evangelism of ICE leading to exposure in a division including the global presence of 1700 colleagues worldwide.
  • Led Interactive prototyping team for the future of PC connect experiences, working with the Windows Longhorn, Media Center and Xbox division to evangelize a user-experience vision and cross collaborative work for ‘better together’ thinking with a PC / mobile device.
  • Led the cross division evangelism and thinking on how applications are discovered and accessed on Windows Mobile devices. 

    Microsoft Research
    Design Manager, Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) (2001-2005)

    • Built and lead cross-disciplinary team of designers responsible  for a new set of mobile Microsoft Products.
    • Setting the Vision: As a rare product development opportunity within Microsoft, SPOT was incubated inside of Microsoft Research. Founding member of the group. Team grew from 7 people to 60 in the course of 3 years.

    In January, 2003 my team was responsible for designing a visionary video that was premiered at the CES Keynote in Las Vegas by the Microsoft chairman. The piece received numerous accolades both inside and outside the company for its vision. In January 2004, the team delivered on that vision by announcing available product. The product was awarded ‘product of the year’ for the Consumer Electronic Show.

    Led a cross disciplinary design team including: 

    • Industrial Design Lead product development & user research for prototypes for mobile devices, including watches.
    • User Interface design Built a team to design, prototype & launch an innovative user interface team for mobility and small devices. The resulting work led to a number exposure inside and outside the company on the topic of ‘Glance-ability’ and pioneered a number of white-papers on ‘glance-able’ initiatives.
    • Web development design  Launch a new MSN service for mobile devices call ‘MSN Direct’
    • New Opportunities / Business Development Led incubation design team that built a portfolio of opportunities over an 8 month period. Team successfully discovered over 12 new applications & opportunities for SPOT technology.

    In January 2005, my design team presented a next generation reference design of a wireless watch.

    The finished reference design produced over 12 patent filings.

    BMW Designworks/USA, 2011
    Consultant, Advanced Communications Group

    BMW Goals: Responsible to design and manage project prototypes and ongoing iterations for the Advanced Communications Group. Successfully integrated information designs into prototype vehicle for Munich evaluation. Created a visual taxonomy for the presentation of real-time information presented in the vehicle

    Scient Corporation, 2000-2001
    Director, Visual Design 

    Major League Baseball – Lead Designer and Customer Experience strategist for MLB. Led the core design team to deliver a common brand and technology platform for the entire league of baseball, including the re-architecture of 30 individual team sites and the league’s online portal. The resulting engagement created a new business for Major League Baseball. The resulting company, MLB Advanced Media was to handle all Digital assets.

    Quokka Sports, 1999-2000
    Design manager of NBC | Quokka Ventures (NQV)  

    Responsible to manage and lead the design and production teams throughout the entire design and architect phase of the project. Built 36 authoritative destination sites for all sport disciplines of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.

    • Directed and maintained overall design integrity and feel of the site.
    • Oversaw all narrative “Features” and sport visualizations.
    • Designed and built a successful NBCOlympics brand.
    • Successfully coordinated with sports producers to improve the narrative approach of the site.

    As a part of Microsoft’s ‘internal moonlighting’ program, Dane wrote, designed and coordinated a 240 page book about the ‘Future’ of memory authoring using digital cameras.

    These are the lessons learned from work experience, affecting my Head, Heart and Skills.

    Dane is the closest thing to a zen master that I’ve had the good fortune to work with. He’s a leader with an innate ability to get dozens of creative individuals to move quickly in multiple directions yet arrive at the same place. And the resulting work impresses CEOs and design luminaries.
